Stop and be astonished; blind yourselves and be blind! They are drunk, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with beer.
For the LORD will rise up as [He did] at Mount Perazim. He will rise in wrath, as at the valley of Gibeon, to do His work, His strange work, and to perform His task, His disturbing task.
Look at the nations and observe-- be utterly astounded! For something is taking place in your days that you will not believe when you hear about it.
We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man-- we don't know where He's from!"
"This is an amazing thing," the man told them. "You don't know where He is from, yet He opened my eyes!
We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him.
Throughout history no one has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a person born blind.
If this man were not from God, He wouldn't be able to do anything."
"You were born entirely in sin," they replied, "and are you trying to teach us?" Then they threw him out.
for the wisdom
For the LORD has poured out on you an overwhelming urge to sleep; He has shut your eyes-- the prophets, and covered your heads-- the seers.
And He replied: Go! Say to these people: Keep listening, but do not understand; keep looking, but do not perceive.
Dull the minds of these people; deafen their ears and blind their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their minds, turn back, and be healed.
Egypt's spirit will be disturbed within it, and I will frustrate its plans. Then they will seek idols, ghosts, spirits of the dead, and spiritists.
The princes of Zoan are complete fools; Pharaoh's wisest advisers give stupid advice! How can you say to Pharaoh, "I am one of the wise, a student of eastern kings."
Where then are your wise men? Let them tell you and reveal what the LORD of Hosts has planned against Egypt.
The princes of Zoan have been fools; the princes of Memphis are deceived. Her tribal chieftains have led Egypt astray.
The LORD has mixed within her a spirit of confusion. [The leaders] have made Egypt stagger in all she does, as a drunkard staggers in his vomit.
He traps the wise in their craftiness so that the plans of the deceptive are quickly brought to an end.
Even the stork in the sky knows her seasons. The turtledove, swallow, and crane are aware of their migration, but My people do not know the requirements of the LORD.
How can you claim: We are wise; the law of the LORD is with us? In fact, the lying pen of scribes has produced falsehood.
The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and snared. They have rejected the word of the LORD, so what wisdom do they really have?
About Edom, this is what the LORD of Hosts says: Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom rotted away?
In that day-- the LORD's declaration-- will I not eliminate the wise ones of Edom and those who understand from the hill country of Esau?
For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things you see yet didn't see them; to hear the things you hear yet didn't hear them."
Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, in order that those who do not see will see and those who do see will become blind."
Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and asked Him, "We aren't blind too, are we?"
"If you were blind," Jesus told them, "you wouldn't have sin. But now that you say, 'We see'-- your sin remains.
when He said, Go to this people and say: 'You will listen and listen, yet never understand; and you will look and look, yet never perceive.
For this people's heart has grown callous, their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and be converted-- and I would heal them.'
For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were darkened.
Claiming to be wise, they became fools
And because they did not think it worthwhile to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them over to a worthless mind to do what is morally wrong.
For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will set aside the understanding of the experts.
Where is the philosopher? Where is the scholar? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn't God made the world's wisdom foolish?
For since, in God's wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of the message preached.
For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom,
but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.
Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is God's power and God's wisdom,
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, since it is written: He catches the wise in their craftiness--
