Woe to those who drag wickedness with cords of deceit and [pull] sin along with cart ropes,
to those who say: "Let Him hurry up and do His work quickly so that we can see it! Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel take place so that we can know it!"
For you said, "We have cut a deal with Death, and we have made an agreement with Sheol; when the overwhelming scourge passes through, it will not touch us, because we have made falsehood our refuge and have hidden behind treachery."
And I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the mason's level." Hail will sweep away the false refuge, and water will flood your hiding place.
Woe to the rebellious children! [This is] the LORD's declaration. They carry out a plan, but not Mine, They make an alliance, but against My will, piling sin on top of sin.
Yet you say: "What does God know? Can He judge through thick darkness?
Clouds veil Him so that He cannot see, as He walks on the circle of the sky."
He says to himself, "God has forgotten; He hides His face and will never see."
Rise up, LORD God! Lift up Your hand. Do not forget the afflicted.
Why has the wicked despised God? He says to himself, "You will not demand an account."
They encourage each other in an evil plan; they talk about hiding traps and say, "Who will see them?"
They devise crimes [and say,] "We have perfected a secret plan." The inner man and the heart are mysterious.
[For the choir director. A Davidic psalm.] LORD, You have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away.
You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, LORD.
You have encircled me; You have placed Your hand on me.
[This] extraordinary knowledge is beyond me. It is lofty; I am unable to [reach] it.
Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?
If I go up to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.
Can a man hide himself in secret places where I cannot see him?"-- the LORD's declaration. "Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?"-- the LORD's declaration.
Then He said to me, "Son of man, do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his idol? For they are saying: The LORD does not see us. The LORD has abandoned the land."
He answered me: "The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is extremely great; the land is full of bloodshed, and the city full of perversity. For they say: The LORD has abandoned the land; He does not see.
And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish the men who settle down comfortably, who say to themselves: The LORD will not do good or evil.
I will kill her children with the plague. Then all the churches will know that I am the One who examines minds and hearts, and I will give to each of you according to your works.
and their works
The wicked are those who rebel against the light. They do not recognize its ways or stay on its paths.
The murderer rises at dawn to kill the poor and needy, and by night he becomes a thief.
The adulterer's eye watches for twilight, thinking: No eye will see me, he covers [his] face.
In the dark they break into houses; by day they lock themselves in, never experiencing the light.
For the morning is like death's shadow to them. Surely they are familiar with the terrors of death's shadow!
There is no darkness, no deep darkness, where evildoers can hide themselves.
In these circumstances, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling on one another. He began to say to His disciples first: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
There is nothing covered that won't be uncovered, nothing hidden that won't be made known.
Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.
"This, then, is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.
Therefore don't judge anything prematurely, before the Lord comes, who will both bring to light what is hidden in darkness and reveal the intentions of the hearts. And then praise will come to each one from God.
Instead, we have renounced shameful secret things, not walking in deceit or distorting God's message, but in God's sight we commend ourselves to every person's conscience by an open display of the truth.
You were secure in your wickedness; you said: No one sees me. Your wisdom and knowledge led you astray. You said to yourself: I, and no one else.
Look, they spew from their mouths-- sharp words from their lips. "For who," [they say,] "will hear?"
They say, "How can God know? Does the Most High know everything?"
They say, "The LORD doesn't see it. The God of Jacob doesn't pay attention."
Pay attention, you stupid people! Fools, when will you be wise?
Can the One who shaped the ear not hear, the One who formed the eye not see?
You have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet you ask, "How have we wearied [Him]?" When you say, "Everyone who does evil is good in the LORD's sight, and He is pleased with them," or "Where is the God of justice?"
