[For the choir director: with stringed instruments. A Davidic psalm.] Answer me when I call, God, who vindicates me. You freed me from affliction; be gracious to me and hear my prayer.
[For the choir director: according to Sheminith. A Davidic psalm.] Help, LORD, for no faithful one remains; the loyal have disappeared from the human race.
and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead the music with lyres according to the Sheminith.
Then He speaks to them in His anger and terrifies them in His wrath:
[A Davidic psalm for remembrance.] LORD, do not punish me in Your anger or discipline me in Your wrath.
"For this is like the days of Noah to Me: when I swore that the waters of Noah would never flood the earth again, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you or rebuke you.
For I will not accuse [you] forever, and I will not always be angry; for then the spirit would grow weak before Me, even the breath [of man], which I have made.
Discipline me, LORD, but with justice-- not in Your anger, or You will reduce me to nothing.
And you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid-- [this is] the LORD's declaration-- for I will be with you. I will bring destruction on all the nations where I have banished you, but I will not bring destruction on you. I will discipline you with justice, but I will by no means leave you unpunished.
If we were properly evaluating ourselves, we would not be judged,
but when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord, so that we may not be condemned with the world.
