But the more, etc
The LORD made His people very fruitful; He made them more numerous than their foes,
No wisdom, no understanding, and no counsel [will prevail] against the LORD.
We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.
for the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and punishes every son whom He receives.
Endure it as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there whom a father does not discipline?
But if you are without discipline-- which all receive-- then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
Furthermore, we had natural fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn't we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live?
For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but He does it for our benefit, so that we can share His holiness.
No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the fruit of peace and righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
He said to his people, "Look, the Israelite people are more numerous and powerful than we are.
For anger kills a fool, and jealousy slays the gullible.
Fury is cruel, and anger is a flood, but who can withstand jealousy?
Then the Pharisees said to one another, "You see? You've accomplished nothing. Look-- the world has gone after Him!"
because they were provoked that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in the person of Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
So they seized them and put them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening.
But many of those who heard the message believed, and the number of the men came to about 5,000.
"Didn't we strictly order you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to bring this man's blood on us!"
But Peter and the apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than men.
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had murdered by hanging Him on a tree.
God exalted this man to His right hand as ruler and Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him."
When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.
