A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring.
Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
Ahimelech replied to the king: "Who among all your servants is as faithful as David? He is the king's son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard, and honored in your house.
Was today the first time I inquired of God for him? Of course not! Please don't let the king make an accusation against your servant or any of my father's household, for your servant didn't have any idea about all this."
But the king said, "You will die, Ahimelech-- you and your father's whole family!"
Then the king ordered the guards standing by him, "Turn and kill the priests of the LORD because they sided with David. For they knew he was fleeing, but they didn't tell me." But the king's servants would not lift a hand to execute the priests of the LORD.
So the king said to Doeg, "Go and execute the priests!" So Doeg the Edomite went and executed the priests himself. On that day, he killed 85 men who wore linen ephods.
But they conspired against him and stoned him at the king's command in the courtyard of the LORD's temple.
King Joash didn't remember the kindness that Zechariah's father Jehoiada had extended to him, but killed his son. While he was dying, he said, "May the LORD see and demand an account."
This is why I am sending you prophets, sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and hound from town to town.
So all the righteous blood shed on the earth will be charged to you, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
I assure you: All these things will come on this generation!
"Jerusalem, Jerusalem! The city who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, yet you were not willing!
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant approached him and she said, "You were with Jesus the Galilean too."
But he denied it in front of everyone: "I don't know what you're talking about!"
When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, "This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!"
And again he denied it with an oath, "I don't know the man!"
After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, "You certainly are one of them, since even your accent gives you away."
Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath, "I do not know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed,
Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They even killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.
They killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and persecuted us; they displease God, and are hostile to everyone,
Then I saw that the woman was drunk on the blood of the saints and on the blood of the witnesses to Jesus. When I saw her, I was utterly astounded.
