they all returned from all the places where they had been banished and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and harvested a great amount of wine and summer fruit.
We remember the free fish we ate in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic.
But now our appetite is gone; there's nothing to look at but this manna!"
Yet they say to God: "Leave us alone! We don't want to know Your ways.
Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him, and what will we gain by pleading with Him?"
They set their mouths against heaven, and their tongues strut across the earth.
Therefore His people turn to them and drink in their overflowing waters.
They say, "How can God know? Does the Most High know everything?"
Look at them-- the wicked! They are always at ease, and they increase their wealth.
Did I purify my heart and wash my hands in innocence for nothing?
For I am afflicted all day long, and punished every morning.
If I had decided to say these things [aloud], I would have betrayed Your people.
"Your words against Me are harsh," says the LORD. Yet you ask: "What have we spoken against You?"
You have said: "It is useless to serve God. What have we gained by keeping His requirements and walking mournfully before the LORD of Hosts?
So now we consider the arrogant to be fortunate. Not only do those who commit wickedness prosper, they even test God and escape."
