When they received it, they began to complain to the landowner:
My husband isn't home; he went on a long journey.
But know this: if the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.
When they say, "Peace and security," then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, brothers, are not in the dark, so that this day would overtake you like a thief.
For you are all sons of light and sons of the day. We're not of the night or of darkness.
So then, we must not sleep, like the rest, but we must stay awake and be sober.
But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that [day] the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed.
Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, [it is clear] what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness
If a thief is caught in the act of breaking in, and he is beaten to death, no one is guilty of bloodshed.
But if this happens after sunrise, there is guilt of bloodshed. A thief must make full restitution. If he is unable, he is to be sold because of his theft.
