Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, as the Spirit gave them ability for speech.

Cretans and Arabs-- we hear them speaking in our own languages the magnificent acts of God."

The LORD said, "If, as one people all having the same language, they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city;

to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing between spirits, to another, different kinds of languages, to another, interpretation of languages.

Then I saw another angel flying in mid-heaven, having the eternal gospel to announce to the inhabitants of the earth-- to every nation, tribe, language, and people.

Then I said: Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips, [and] because my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.

"Is not My word like fire"-- the LORD's declaration-- "and like a sledgehammer that pulverizes rock?

But who can endure the day of His coming? And who will be able to stand when He appears? For He will be like a refiner's fire and like cleansing lye.

He will be like a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will present offerings to the LORD in righteousness.

"I baptize you with water for repentance, but the One who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to take off His sandals. He Himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

So they said to each other, "Weren't our hearts ablaze within us while He was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us?"

And the tongue is a fire. The tongue, a world of unrighteousness, is placed among the parts of our [bodies]; it pollutes the whole body, sets the course of life on fire, and is set on fire by hell.

I will empower my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, dressed in sackcloth."

During these days Peter stood up among the brothers-- the number of people who were together was about 120-- and said:

The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him-- a Spirit of wisdom and understanding, a Spirit of counsel and strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

His delight will be in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what He sees with His eyes, He will not execute justice by what He hears with His ears,

Jesus answered him, "Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him [to be baptized].

And John testified, "I watched the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He rested on Him.

I didn't know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The One you see the Spirit descending and resting on-- He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
