When he arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him and brought many serious charges that they were not able to prove,
But if these are questions about words, names, and your own law, see to it yourselves. I don't want to be a judge of such things."
When they reached Ephesus he left them there, but he himself entered the synagogue and engaged in discussion with the Jews.
I found out that the accusations were about disputed matters in their law, and that there was no charge that merited death or chains.
Then Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect.
For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.
beginning from the baptism of John until the day He was taken up from us-- from among these, it is necessary that one become a witness with us of His resurrection."
"God has resurrected this Jesus. We are all witnesses of this.
because He has set a day on which He is going to judge the world in righteousness by the Man He has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead."
Since I have obtained help that comes from God, to this day I stand and testify to both small and great, saying nothing else than what the prophets and Moses said would take place--
that the Messiah must suffer, and that as the first to rise from the dead, He would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles."
For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is without foundation, and so is your faith.
In addition, we are found to be false witnesses about God, because we have testified about God that He raised up Christ-- whom He did not raise up if in fact the dead are not raised.
For if the dead are not raised, Christ has not been raised.
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
Therefore those who have fallen asleep in Christ have also perished.
If we have placed our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone.
But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
and the Living One. I was dead, but look-- I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and Hades.
