Be careful that there isn't this wicked thought in your heart, 'The seventh year, the year of canceling debts, is near,' and you are stingy toward your poor brother and give him [nothing]. He will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty.
Don't eat a stingy person's bread, and don't desire his choice food,
A greedy man is in a hurry for wealth; he doesn't know that poverty will come to him.
Don't I have the right to do what I want with my business? Are you jealous because I'm generous?'
"If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, 'Let us go and worship other gods'-- which neither you nor your fathers have known,
but the poor man had nothing except one small ewe lamb that he had bought. It lived and grew up with him and his children. It shared his meager food and drank from his cup; it slept in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him.
Do not rely on a friend; don't trust in a close companion. Seal your mouth from the woman who lies in your arms.
As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.
"Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion for the child of her womb? Even if these forget, yet I will not forget you.
What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish?
Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"
