Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ.
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of God's revelation. You need milk, not solid food.
Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant.
Like newborn infants, desire the unadulterated spiritual milk, so that you may grow by it in [your] salvation,
[be careful] that your heart doesn't become proud and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
Then his heart will not be exalted above his countrymen, he will not turn from this command to the right or the left, and he and his sons will continue ruling many years over Israel.
You have indeed defeated Edom, and you have become overconfident. Enjoy your glory and stay at home. Why should you stir up such trouble that you fall-- you and Judah with you?"
But when he became strong, he grew arrogant and it led to his own destruction. He acted unfaithfully against the LORD his God by going into the LORD's sanctuary to burn incense on the incense altar.
However, because his heart was proud, Hezekiah didn't respond according to the benefit that had come to him. So there was wrath upon him, upon Judah, and upon Jerusalem.
Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.
Better to be lowly of spirit with the humble than to divide plunder with the proud.
Before his downfall a man's heart is proud, but before honor comes humility.
A person's pride will humble him, but a humble spirit will gain honor.
For a day belonging to the LORD of Hosts is [coming] against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up-- it will be humbled--
Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the saying: "Nothing beyond what is written." The purpose is that none of you will be inflated with pride in favor of one person over another.
For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you didn't receive? If, in fact, you did receive it, why do you boast as if you hadn't received it?
Already you are full! Already you are rich! You have begun to reign as kings without us-- and I wish you did reign, so that we also could reign with you!
About food offered to idols: We know that "we all have knowledge." Knowledge inflates with pride, but love builds up.
especially because of the extraordinary revelations. Therefore, so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to torment me so I would not exalt myself.
Likewise, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Shining morning star, how you have fallen from the heavens! You destroyer of nations, you have been cut down to the ground.
You said to yourself: "I will ascend to the heavens; I will set up my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mount of the [gods'] assembly, in the remotest parts of the North.
I will ascend above the highest clouds; I will make myself like the Most High."
He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like a lightning flash.
For if God didn't spare the angels who sinned, but threw them down into Tartarus and delivered them to be kept in chains of darkness until judgment;
and He has kept, with eternal chains in darkness for the judgment of the great day, angels who did not keep their own position but deserted their proper dwelling.
