And to whom did He "swear that they would not enter His rest," if not those who disobeyed?
So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
(for we who have believed enter the rest), in keeping with what He has said: So I swore in My anger, they will not enter My rest. And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world,
The LORD responded, "I have pardoned [them] as you requested.
Yet as surely as I live and as the whole earth is filled with the LORD's glory,
none of the men who have seen My glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tested Me these 10 times and did not obey Me,
will ever see the land I swore to [give] their fathers. None of those who have despised Me will see it.
"How long [must I endure] this evil community that keeps complaining about Me? I have heard the Israelites' complaints that they make against Me.
Tell them: As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you exactly as I heard you say.
Your corpses will fall in this wilderness-- all of you who were registered [in the census], the entire number of you 20 years old or more-- because you have complained about Me.
I swear that none of you will enter the land I promised to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
So the Lord's anger burned that day, and He swore an oath:
'Because they did not follow Me completely, none of the men 20 years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore [to give] Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob--
none except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they did follow the LORD completely.'
The Lord's anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness 40 years until the whole generation that had done what was evil in the LORD's sight was gone.
"When the LORD heard your words, He grew angry and swore an oath:
'None of these men in this evil generation will see the good land I swore to give your fathers,
The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley was 38 years until the entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.
A Sabbath rest remains, therefore, for God's people.
