It does not come easy, yet as believers, we have to recognize that our ability and willingness to offer it are the result of Christ’s saving work on the cross. Because of that fact, forgiveness serves as a determining factor in who we say we are and how we hope to live our lives. When we do not forgive, bitterness takes root in our hearts and chokes the vitality out of us.

False teaching may be more attractive at first, but in the end, it leads to death. We don’t need to fall for false teaching. Instead, may we rely on God’s Spirit to teach us and guide us with the truth of God.

When God created family, He created it to be a blessing. But from the beginning it was a battlefield. The first married couple hindered and blamed each other. Their children hated and killed each other. Their lack of love led to spiritual and physical death. So, God created a new family in Christ—His church. They are clearly identified, not by size, shape or color, but by the practice of genuine love.

There could be several reasons why people would be reluctant to confess and deal with their sins. It could be a pride issue. They might underestimate God’s grace and fear they’ve messed up too big to be forgiven. They could be afraid of judgement from the church. They might be embarrassed that they’ve been dealing with the same sin their entire life. If having a walk with God will cause us to deal with our sin, then the inverse is also true. When we’re unwilling to deal with our sin, it will affect our walk with God.

John’s testimony carries weight and authority because of his firsthand encounters with Jesus. He was there with Jesus during most of His ministry. He saw it all. His letter isn’t full of instructions John made up on his own; he’s just passing on what he’s witnessed so his audience can come to know the same joy he possesses.

The Jews lived under constant Roman oppression. One demand by a Roman soldier or citizen would require a Jewish person to carry their burden for a mile. It was an inconvenient and unjust law. Israel lived in anticipation of the coming of Messiah. One who would deliver them from such tyranny! Now, here Jesus stood…telling them they should carry their Roman neighbors pack for a second mile?!? Surely this could not be what He meant. But it was.
